    Golden Temple

The monastery Hiranya Varna Mahavihar is located in the royal city of Patan in Kathmandu. It is widely known as the Golden Temple because of the gilded metal plates covering most of it’s frontage. The monastery has no regular priest. Based on a practice of Newari Buddhism every month the members of a different family from the area take responsibility of the temple’s rituals and other needs. Three members of the family, a boy below the age of 15, a man above the age of 15 and a woman above the age of 30 stay inside the monastery during the whole month. Most of the responsibilities are handled by the boy.

In April 2013 the 9 year old monk-priest of that month introduced me to the rituals of the monastery. During the period of his monkshood none would call his name. The day he passed on his duties to the next monk-priest his mother called him Siddhartha.
